at 7:59 PMtoday was last day of work attachment, and it ended with a blast! the morning was pretty boring. i was observing general dentistry and endodontics. GD is the normal dental checkups you go for, just cleaning, scaling, filling, extraction, blah blah. endodontics is the root canal specialist. the tools are uber cool. the doctor uses a microscope to examine your root canal, and they have this machine which measures the LENGTH of the thing. imagine how small your tooth is, and so your root canal is inside your tooth. haha. technology these days is fantastic. after lunch break was prosthodontics. this is the doctor who makes crowns, bridges (implants) dentures, teeth bleaching blah blah. the doctor was a really nice guy. he's really a very good doctor. you can tell that he's really passionate about his job, and that he really cares about his patients. he's always asks them how they are feeling, and lovingly cleans the teeth of his patients, cos most of them are cancer patients. sometimes, those who suffer cancer of the throat or mouth etc, mainly the parts around the face, parts can be lost during therapy or sugery. so he helps reconstruct them, like dentures and crowns etc. he is even in charge of making prosthetic noses, ears and even fake eyeballs for patients! before we left too, he brought us to the lab where they make all these dentures. he shows us the mould used to capture the shape of structure of each patients mouth, and loads of other stuff. it's ultra cool. the good thing about attachments is that you see things that other people can't see, walk in places others can't, especially the 'no entry' places like labs, :P you feel very special. haha! :) and you can also enter the doctors' lounge! like the general dentist was going for a break and he allowed me to join him. so we went to the lounge where dentists can have drinks or snacks while waiting for the next appointment. just like you see in the movies or those doctor shows!!!! mind you, they have A LOT of food. like one whole cupboard full. but i felt kinda out of place cos i was the only kid there and they were talking all the medical stuff. didn't understand a clue about what they were conversing. so i just minded my own business and tried to fade into the background. i also got to wear all the suits and gowns worn by the doctors, cos we were supposed to (don't ask me why). but i didn't mind it cos it was kinda fun. all in all it was a really enriching experience. though some parts were so so boring, i really learnt alot the past 3 days, and it has convinced me that it is a possible career path to think about. if i do do it, i think i would go into prosthetics and orthodontics. i like all these aesthetics stuff to help people obtain that beautiful smile. :D but, as every doctor says, the most important thing right now is to study hard, tackle the 'A's, and actually get INTO dental school. that's the hardest part. they only have like, 42 places. 42 freaking places!! for those thousands of people who apply. crazy man. looks like i have to go overseas liao. no, i have to better START studying first. oh bloody shit............-_-"' xoxo, you know you love me |
